In early 2005, it was announced that Sideshow Collectibles had acquired a sub-license from Hasbro to produce 1/6th scale figures. Before producing a single figure, they held a poll that ran from August 19 to November 4, 2005 to choose an Expanded Universe figure to produce. The six choices were Asajj Ventress, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Kir Kanos, Mara Jade, Padmé (arctic suit), and Quinlan Vos. Thanks to a late surge, Padmé won with 1858 votes to 1804 votes for Mara Jade. Kir Kanos (1697) was third followed by Quinlan Vos (1392), Asajj Ventress (1386) and Grand Admiral Thrawn (1157).
There are several odd facts related to this poll. Even though she finished fifth, Sideshow made an Asajj Ventress figure which was released several months before Padmé. Two years later, they made a Grand Admiral Thrawn figure. They have not produced the figures which finished 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in the poll. They haven’t even produced an Imperial Royal Guard which would be a starting point upon which a Kir Kanos figure would be built. But perhaps the oddest fact of all is that this is the only Padmé Amidala figure in the line. There has not been a Padmé figure based on the live-action films. Since Aayla Secura originated in the comics, it could be said that no female figures based on prequel costumes have been produced.
I pre-ordered this figure from Sideshow Collectibles on July 26, 2007. It was shipped on February 26, 2008.
